Nominees for Vestry, Class of 2027

Betsy Elsas

I am honored to be nominated to serve on the Vestry at St. James Episcopal Church. I have been a member of our church community for over 15 years and I have been blessed to participate in outreach, choir, flower guild and as a past Vestry member.

Professionally, I have experience in finance, one on one training, and retail. I have also held many volunteer positions in this community and where I lived in New Jersey, Garden Club, Family and Children’s Services, St. George’s Episcopal Church. Presently I am the Treasurer for North Georgia Community Players. I have been an active member of Mt. Ivy Garden Club for over 9 years and recently became an Auxiliary Member. My hobbies are gardening, cooking, knitting, needlepoint and my fondest hobby of playing bridge.

My goal in serving on the Vestry is to support St. James, foster community growth, strengthen spiritual outreach, and support our Church operations in any way I can. I am deeply committed to our church’s mission and look forward to serving with faith humility and dedication.

Thank you for considering me for this opportunity to serve our church family.

Shelley Urban

I am from Clearwater, Florida, where I was raised Catholic and attended Catholic schools until 8th grade. I have a B.S. in Sports Science from the University of West Florida and was an athletic director and PE teacher for 27 years for the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

In 2020, I decided to retire from teaching and now split my time between Florida and Lake Burton with my partner of 28 years, Deacon Susi. I first discovered St. James in 2010 and in June of this year was received into the Episcopal Church by Bishop Rob Wright at the Cathedral of St. Philips in Atlanta. St. James is a supportive and welcoming place to grow, minister, and glorify the love of God.

My ministries at St. James have included lector, stewardship, altar guild, outreach, and maintaining the church's Facebook page. I look forward to the opportunity to support the church by serving on the Vestry.

In my spare time I enjoy substituting at my former school, volunteering at First Impressions, traveling to new places, e-biking, hiking, golfing, and spending time with my dogs, Siler and Biffy.
